Blog 2 Presentation Reflection
Public speaking has been a wonderful class so far and this past project has truly expanded my mind and knowledge among a variety of topics. The theme project has helped me gain an abundance of knowledge on my group's topic, the environment and public safety, but also other group's topics such as healthcare, education, and more.
My group was the first to present which was different for us because we are accustomed to always presenting last because we are group 4. Nevertheless, we completed our presentation, and I believe we carried out a thorough and successful presentation. Brianna introduced the group with a great example of former President Reagan and his approach to regulation of laws and government oversight. She proceeded to introduce the principle focus of the group and that was, how does the United States protect the environment and public safety when politics, economies, and science collide? Victory kicked off the presentation by covering for Sury while using her slides. Through Sury's slides, Victor was able to explain why does the environment matter? And how it affects us? Through this discussion I realized that the environment really has an impact on everything. It can impact the food we eat, the parks we play sports in, or the community we reside within. The presentation demonstrated that the environment is a sincere testimony of our care for the planet. I acquired a tremendous amount of knowledge and reasoning regarding public safety and certain laws of the United States, as my assigned topic within my group was public safety. I studied topics such as the gun control act, Miranda V. Arizona, and more. For the project, I was able to interview one of my friends, Giovanni Mendoza, who is a criminal justice major at Miami Dade College. Him and I really got to thinking and debating a variety of topics such as gun control, class statuses, etc. This was a fun experience because I was able to discuss certain topics with my friend that I typically would not discuss on a regular day. The rest of my group worked on explaining how public safety, the environment, and economy collide, while others expanded on some of these individual topics themselves. Carolina concluded our presentation with a very impactful quote that has truly intrigued me. As Robert Swan states " The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it."
Group 3's presentation was very enjoyable and informative. Melinda began by introducing civic engagement regarding education in the United States vs the rest of the world. She played an interview which she conducted with an ELA department chair. In this interview I found it a little unfortunate that many parents are not very involved in their child's education, and many of the times it is due to an overwhelming amount of stress because they already have to worry about providing for their children and their family. I really liked Ricardo's idea of bringing his mother live into the class and doing a live interview with her. It was very entertaining to see his mother touch on the subject of cellphones in the classroom and parent involvement in their child's education. Mykell's portion of the presentation was extremely intriguing because of the unfortunate reality that many girls around the world may not be permitted to have an education or at least a very long and complete one. It made me think that I am fortunate and blessed to be where I am today and receiving an education, because not everyone can. It shifted my mind from complaining constantly to instead recognize that I really am fortunate and privileged. The quote Carolina used in this conclusion resonated with me, it was by Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." All in all, this group was definitely one of my favorites to watch and had a lot of information I absorbed and keep with me till today.
Group 2 discussed a subject I find myself to be very passionate about as it relates to healthcare. Their topic was healthcare and immigration. Gayelle began the presentation by exploring the history of healthcare and what healthcare is. She shared that the ultimate goals of healthcare are to prevent, diagnose, treat illness. and improve the wellbeing of individuals to steer them away from illness and disease. Additionally, she shared a major piece of history of health care, it was that former President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the law which created Medicare and Medicaid. Therefore, it is because of this signing, many people can be treated, diagnosed, etc. to fulfill the goals of healthcare. Kayling continued to speak on an American vs World perspective on heath care and shared an interview she conducted with Dr.Alyssa Garcia. It was interesting to hear Dr Garcia's perspective and opinions on the US healthcare system and how it compares to other countries. In essence, this group did a fantastic job at gathering so much quantitative yet qualitative information at the same time. It was very intriguing to watch.
Lastly, Group 1 spoke on the topic of Immigration and the Economy. I did enjoy watching this presentation and I felt that it was extremely relevant to the times we are currently living in. Christopher started by discussing why people may have to leave their home countries in the first place. Such as wars, poverty, etc. He explained that these are push factors to get people to move away from their home countries and pull factors were things such as economic opportunity would gravitate people towards leaving their home country for a new one. The rest of the rest of the group dived deep into how immigration can affect the economy and how different immigration system work here in the US and in other countries. They communicated that an increase level of immigration, may grow the economy and that could be both beneficial or harmful. This group carried a smooth presentation all the way through and I feel that all the members spoke with a great amount of clarity and provided great information and data.
